The CORDIC Algorithm and its Application in the Implementation of Digital Communication Systems in FPGA and ASIC

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) plays a crucial role in the implementation of wired and wireless digital communication systems. When it comes to DSP implementation in real-time hardware systems, such as FPGA and ASIC, one of the main goals is the reduction of computational complexity. There are several ways to achieve this, but one of the most used is using the CORDIC (Coordinate Rotation Digital Computer) algorithm, with which is possible to perform several DSP operations without the use of multipliers and dividers. In this presentation we will introduce the CORDIC Algorithms in detail, and also present its use in various projects regarding the implementation of communication systems in ASIC and FPGA carried out at Instituto de Pesquisas Eldorado, in Campinas.

Dr. Eduardo Rodrigues de Lima  – R&D Manager at Instituto de Pesquisas Eldorado, in Campinas-SP, where he coordinates projects for digital transceivers and receivers, radio frequency front-end, ADCs, DACs, PLLs, wireless networks and implementation of these systems in ASIC, FPGA , SDR or Embedded Systems. Holds a PhD in Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), in Spain, in the concentration area of Theory of Signals and Communications.

He is a CNPq Productivity Researcher Fellow in Technological Development and Innovative Extension. He was visiting researcher at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven / Interuniversity Microeletronics Centre-IMEC in Belgium. He is a Specialist in Mobile Communications by the UPV/Vodafone and holds bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from the São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho – UNESP – Ilha Solteira, with an emphasis on Electronics. Regularly acts as a Visiting Professor at the FEEC/UNICAMP, specially at DECOM, where he maintains close collaboration with several professors. He is currently the coordinator of R&D projects for ANEEL, ANP, EMBRAPII and the Informatics Law, as well as internal projects at the Eldorado institute, all dealing with Information and Communication Technology on different platforms. He was a partner at Idea! Electronic Systems, where, among several other activities, he was  the Architect of the Digital TV Demodulator ASIC developed by Idea! in partnership with Eldorado. Currently, he is in the final phase of the International Executive MBA from Fundação Instituto de Administração –FIA, with the final work regarding the creation of an business model for an exponential innovative startup targeting Aging people. He has broad multidisciplinary interests in science, technology and the arts (he is an amateur singer, and plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar and piano).
